Can you hear the ticking,
of a clock that’s running late
and softly falling rain
on the window panes and slate?

Are you reading this now solo
stretched out on the settee,
limbs weary and back aching;
are you also having tea?

Perhaps you’re in the kitchen,
preparing something sweet?
Are you half way through a chapter,
or watching the TV?

Will you get up soon for something
on toast, or maybe cheese -
put laundry on, prepare for bed,
go up to brush your teeth?

May I punctuate your evening
with a little levity?

Can I be your Oxford Comma
in the place of a Full Stop?
What worlds untold lie ahead
in the form of Dot Dot Dot…

Dear reader, if it sounds cliché
be assured that it is not,
for the real panache is in the Dash,
whereafter starts the plot.
